The rock, a glacial erratic boulder, displaced by inexorable incomprehensible force beyond its control, is a meaningless thing in itself. It finds itself in a new strange land — a vast silent horizon goes on forever, like the barrens of Newfoundland. Nowhere becomes somewhere. Maybe someone left a a trace, a touch, a record, marked a path, a place, resolve, hope.

A note on the paintings
These paintings are oil on canvas and range in size from about one foot to eight feet wide. They are painted in many layers (thirty or forty) of translucent paint and glaze, slowly building the image. Much of the work is done subtractively: a ‘coat’ of paint is applied to the entire surface, and selectively removed.
The imagery in my paitntings responds to the dimensions and geometries of each canvas—the physical fact of the artwork. Such responsiveness complicates the relationship between the two and through that creates a new presence for the work.
